Rangers have opened talks to sign goalkeeper Stefan Marinovic on a free transfer this month, according to Football Insider.

The reliable site claim the Glasgow giants are working on a deal for the New Zealand international, 27, after he arrived at their Auchenhowie training headquarters to undergo a trial,

Football Insider report Marinovic is a free agent after his contract at MLS club Vancouver Whitecaps expired last month.

Good move for Rangers?

Steven Gerrard is well served in the goalkeeper position through Allan McGregor, one of the outstanding players in the SPL this season, and his able deputy Wes Foderingham. But, if as expected, the Englishman heads back south of the border this year, Rangers are going to need proven cover for McGregor. Marinovic, who has been capped 24 times by New Zealand and has played in German as well as the US, is a keeper approaching his peak. Standing at 6ft 4in (source: Transfermarkt), he cuts a commanding presence, but is agile for his height and has excellent reflexes. The proven performer could be just what Rangers need if Foderingham leaves.

Likely to happen?

There is a very good chance, indeed. Football Insider report Marinovic is eager to move to a club in England and would prefer to join Rangers ahead of in-form Championship club Hull City. Given that he is already at Auchenhowie, there is a strong chance a deal can be done.
