Rangers could be ready to make US international Matt Polster their fifth signing of the January window after he blew their coaching staff away, according to the Scottish Sun.

The national newspaper claim that the 25-year-old, who can play at full-back or central midfield, has left the Ibrox staff “hugely impressed” with his efforts during a trial in Glasgow.

The Scottish Sun showed Polster linking up with the Scottish giants once again at their training camp in Tenerife as he pushes to win a full-time contract.

OPINION

Polster is kind of a Jon Flanagan, but with bells on. The ex-Liverpool man can operate in both full-back positions and do a decent job in both. Polster has the advantage of also being able to play in midfield, just like fans favourite Andy Halliday. A one-time US international, he has the advantage of being available now after missing the majority of last season with a knee injury. Rangers have had plenty of opportunity to assess Polster at close quarters, first during a trial in December at their training headquarters and now in the sunnier climes of Tenerife. The difficulty for the Scottish giants could be securing a work permit for the American, although they are generally easier to get in Scotland than south of the border. Given that Polster is in the right place at the right time, he could soon be secured as Rangers’ fifth January signing after deals were done last weekend for Jermain Defoe, Steven Davis, Glen Kamara and Jordan Jones.
