Celtic have tabled an offer for American left-back Andrew Gutman, according to The Athletic.

The American news outlet claims that the Hoops are set to sign the Chicago Fire academy product, who has impressed in college-level football while playing forĀ Indiana Hoosiers.

Rangers have recently taken Gutman on trial after Steven Gerrard confirmed, via BBC Sport, that he was taking a look at the 22-year-old defender.

However it looks as though he could be opting for a move to Celtic Park as it is understood that an agreement with the Bhoys is “likely”.

Good move for Celtic?

It will be quite a leap for Gutman to go from college-level football in the USA to the Scottish Premiership when he has never made a senior appearance in his entire career.

Celtic are taking a bit of a risk on the American left-back, but it is probably one that is worth taking because he’s unlikely to cost much money and there is the chance that he could be worth some cash in the future.

Don’t expect Gutman to reach the Hoops’ first team anytime soon though.

He is 22 and is lacking a lot of experience, so sending him out on loan could be a good idea as soon as he arrives.

Likely to happen?

The Athletic is a Chicago-based news outlet, Gutman played for the Chicago Fire academy and was born in the state of Illinois, so they are likely to have a very firm idea of where the left-back will be heading in the future.

As confirmed by Gerrard, the player is already in Scotland to some degree, so there is definitely a chance of this happening.
