Celtic legend Davie Provan has claimed that Rangers star Alfredo Morelos is a certainty to be sold by the Ibrox club in the summer.

Steven Gerrard’s side are in the midst of an intense Scottish Premiership title race, and have spent accordingly, and Provan feels that will come back to bite them.

“Recognising Celtic’s fragility, Gers are emptying out their pockets this season,” he wrote in his Scottish Sun column. “They’re mortgaging this campaign against Alfredo Morelos, who’ll be sold this summer.

“With Morelos a cert to move in the next window and loanees returning to their clubs, Gerrard is looking at a rebuild next season. Having already pushed the boat out for this campaign, where do Gers find the cash next time around? The Ibrox balance sheet already resembles a train wreck.”

OPINION

It’s ludicrous for Provan to claim with certainty that Morelos will be sold in the summer. Unless he has some inside information that he’s not telling us about there’s no way for him to know that as a fact. Ultimately, though, he is guessing. He’s assuming that because of how much Rangers are spending on the wages of players like Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis that they’ll be forced to sell Morelos in the summer. That may or may not turn out to be the case, but it is only Provan’s opinion. He makes a decent point about the spending at Ibrox, though. The club must be spending every spare penny they have at the moment, and that’s just not sustainable moving forward. So perhaps the club will be forced into selling some of their star players in the summer, who knows? Gerrard won’t give up Morelos without a fight, though, so we’ll have to wait and see how this one plays out in a few months time.
