Rangers should brace themselves for a bid from an English club for their right-back mainstay James Tavernier, according to a reliable journalist.

Bill Young, from RockSport Radio, claimed that the bid would be for £7million and that the “source is good”.

Young made the claim on his personal Twitter page on Tuesday morning.

Sky Sports had previously reported that Brighton were keeping tabs on Tavernier ahead of the January window and Steven Gerrard had said that any bid would have to be an “awful lot of money”, saying Tavernier had been “absolutely fabulous’ for him.

OPINION

Rangers fans will be torn on this. £7million is a lot of money for a player like Tavernier, who fans have a love/hate relationship with. Good going forward, there’s always the feeling that Tavernier could do better defensively. However, he has scored six goals and added eight assists, and there’s the small matter of being the Ranger skipper too. If the offer is genuine then there will be a real decision to be made. Rangers do have Jon Flanagan and while he’s disappointed when called on in the left-back position, he could be a lot better in his normal spot on the right. Rangers have already made some quality signings and the £7million would be very useful in balancing the books. He’s had interest from English clubs before but nothing came of it in the end, and Brighton were linked back in October. Will this January be different? And if Tavernier does go, it will be interesting to see if Gerrard gets the money to re-invest.
