Rangers deserve to sign players like Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis, according to Connor Goldson.

The Gers welcomed the two experienced signings to their warm weather training camp in Tenerife yesterday after completing loan deals for both players.

Speaking to Sky Sports (9.46), when asked if Defoe and Davis could help with a title challenge, the 26-year-old defender said: “We hope so. Obviously that’s what they’ve been brought in to help to do.

“They’re both great signings for us as a team and a club, and I think they’re signings the club deserves to have. A club this size deserves to attract players of that level.

“Hopefully they can come in and have a good impact on us as a team. You do, you want the best players to be next to you, playing with you on your team.”

OPINION

After a positive start to the season, the signings of Defoe and Davis are the clearest indication yet that Rangers are becoming a real force in Scottish football again. To suggest that the club deserve signings like that might seem a little arrogant, but they have worked hard to be where they are, and there is no denying the stature and history of the club. Both players could, and should, have a massive bearing on the title race, and their acquisitions have forced rivals Celtic to respond in kind with their own glut of winter business. It will be interesting to see how Defoe and Davis adapt to life in Scotland, but the general consensus is that they will seamlessly flourish, and that in itself gives the signings a sense of potency not usually reserved for less experienced players. It might not happen this season, but if Rangers continue to develop under Steven Gerrard like this, it won’t be long until they’re back on top.
