Southampton midfielder Steven Davis has agreed the terms of a two-and-a-half year Rangers deal as he prepares to complete a return to Ibrox, according to the Scottish Herald.

The newspaper claim that Davis, 34, has settled terms on an initial 18-month contract with the Glasgow giants that will include the option for a further one-year extension.

The Herald report the Northern Ireland international is expected to seal a move back to Rangers in the coming days as the club land their first signing of the January window.

Good move for Rangers?

Definitely. What is so exciting for Bears about Davis is that he is an all-round midfielder who can create and destroy in equal measure. His statistics in his first Ibrox spell were outstanding – a jawdropping 60 assists supplementing the 21 goals he scored in 200 appearances – and he has showed at Southampton over the last six years that he can consistently deliver the goods in the Premier League. Davis has lost his regular starting spot at the Saints – although he did skipper the side in their defeat to Tottenham last month – but that does not mean he can’t make a huge impact for a Rangers side crying out for nous and pedigree in the centre of the pitch. Davis may have turned 34 on New Year’s Day but he can still be a huge hit back at Ibrox.

Likely to happen?

This appears all but a done deal. Davis has been increasingly strongly linked with a return to Ibrox over the past few weeks, and it is surely only a matter of time before he puts pen to paper on a contract with the club he supported as a boy.
