Christian Eriksen demonstrated once again his immense value to Tottenham with his latest masterclass on New Year’s Day.

The great Dane scored the second of Spurs’ three early goals in their convincing and one-sided triumph against Cardiff City and showed why an extension to his contract must be near the top of the club’s to-do list even in a year in which they will move to a new stadium and face a potentially huge battle to keep their manager.

The problem for Tottenham, the board and an entire fanbase desperate for Eriksen to commit to the club beyond the summer of 2020 is that no progress has been made in talks over a new deal.

The latest situation, according to the Daily Telegraph is that the north Londoners “are yet to make any clear breakthrough in negotiations with his representatives” despite being in talks over extending his £70,000-a-week deal since last season.

It is said that “nerves are growing at the club that he has yet to put pen to paper” over a deal amid reported interest from Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona.

You can bet your life that Spurs fans everywhere will be getting the big fear over this latest update.

They are desperate for Eriksen to follow Harry Kane and Dele Alli in penning a long-term deal.

The attacking midfielder is every bit as important as the English duo to Tottenham’s chances of maintaining their status as a real force in Premier League and European football, and also going to the next level of hoarding trophies.
