Celtic are on high alert after Bournemouth informed striker Jermain Defoe he may leave the club this month, according to the Scotsman.

The newspaper report that the Hoops have been alerted to the situation after Cherries manager Eddie Howe admitted that the veteran forward is unlikely to play much of a part for the club in the coming months.

The Scotsman claim that Defoe is currently earning a massive £100,000-a-week at Bournemouth but is willing to take a cut in that wage to guarantee regular first-team football.

Good move for Celtic?

Absolutely.

Defoe is as natural a goalscorer as they come, with the former England international having operated at the highest level throughout his career.

Celtic are in dire need of another striker in January to lighten the workload on youngster Odsonne Edouard, and Defoe could be the perfect candidate to do just that.

Likely to happen?

Unfortunately, you would think not.

Defoe is currently earning an obscene wage at Bournemouth, and while it is said he is willing to take a pay cut for regular first-team football, Celtic are unlikely to be able to even pay him half of his current salary.

That is likely to be a step too far for Defoe, who is more likely to end up remaining in the Premier League or dropping down to the Championship.
