Celtic have lined up a £2million bid for Porto right-back Fernando Fonseca, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper claim the Glasgow giants have turned their attention to the 21-year-old after failing in moves for Atalanta’s Timothy Castagne and Olympiacos’ Omar Elabdellaoui.

The Scottish Sun report Champions League last-16 outfit Porto are “open to doing business with the Hoops” over Fonseca and he is keen to move on and get regular first-team football.

Good move for Celtic?

Fonseca has pedigree, but little in the way of senior experience. The fact he has 12 Portugal Under-21 caps makes it clear he is a talent, but has he fallen away? The youngster is down the pecking order at the Euro big hitters and has spent the season playing for their ‘B’ side. That said, Celtic could be landing a player of huge potential who just needs an opportunity and platform to shine. With Mikael Lustig on his last legs and out of contract at the end of the season, Celtic are crying out for a right-back worthy of the name. A move for Fonseca would have its question marks, but he could be an unpolished gem.

Likely to happen?

It is no wonder Porto are open to doing business. Fonseca is currently playing for their reserves and has made just one senior appearance for their first team. Given Celtic’s real need for a right-back and the 21-year-old’s status at the Portugese giants, a deal can certainly be done if the numbers add up.
