Celtic are firmly in the race to sign Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay on loan this month, according to the Scottish Daily Mail.

The newspaper claim the Premier League giants could sanction the temporary exit of the 22-year-old in “the coming days” although that depends upon the future of Marouane Fellaini.

The Mail report McTominay “is likely to be farmed out” if Fellaini stays put, with Celtic “among a number of clubs on both sides of the border monitoring his situation”.

Good move for Celtic?

Yes, definitely. McTominay is a composed and authoritative midfielder who has demonstrated signs he can be a real force in the future. The 6ft 4in Scot (source: Transfermarkt) has made 33 first-team appearances for United since breaking into their senior set-up, eight of which have come this season. He was regularly used by ex-boss Jose Mourinho, but has been on the fringes over the last month. Celtic are in need of central midfield reinforcements, an area of the squad that has been ignored so far during the transfer window. The five-times Scotland international is good enough to slot straight into the team.

Likely to happen?

United might wait until later this month before giving the green light for McTominay to go out on loan, and it appears his immediate future is tied up with Belgium international Fellaini. Should his fellow powerhouse remain at Old Trafford, Celtic appear to have as good a chance as anyone of sealing this deal.
