Kris Boyd claimed on talkSPORT today that he expects Brendan Rodgers to quit Celtic for Leicester City if they make him an offer to take over as manager.

The Kilmarnock striker and Sky Sports pundit claimed the ambitious Northern Irishman would be making a step down in terms of club calibre but believes a leading Premier League project would be difficult for him to turn down.

It has been reported in the last 24 hours that Rodgers is Leicester’s number one target to take over from under-fire Claude Puel.

Speaking to Jim White on talkSPORT, Boyd said: “If he’s given the opportunity, I fully expect him to take it. But there’s no doubt Celtic fans and the players and board would want him to stay there until the end of the season.”

“It’s a fantastic job. It’s only a couple of seasons ago that you were talking about Leicester being the champions of England. It’s definitely a club that have got lots of money. It would be very difficult to go win the league again but there’s potential there to create something.

“Brendan likes a project, there’s no doubt about that. You see what he’s done at other clubs and it might be the start of something for Leicester again as well to stay at the top end of English football.

OPINION

Celtic fans should be concerned at the prospect of losing their feted manager. No-one should doubt the impact made by Rodgers in Scotland over the last three seasons, where he has won every domestic trophy going and overseen three consecutive Champions League campaigns. The unbeaten league season will ensure his name will be mentioned in discussions about the greatest-ever managers north of the border, although some claim his achievements have been tainted by Rangers being in the doldrums for the first two of his seasons in Scotland after their half-decade of financial strife. With no signs of real ambition from the Celtic board or willingness to be a major player in Europe, there is a real sense that Rodgers has done as much as he can in Scotland and can return south of the border with his head held high. As far as Bhoys are concerned, he must stay until the end of the season and a walk-out before then would tarnish his legacy.
