It will be very interesting to see who out of Rangers and Celtic can win the reported race to sign Jack Whatmough as the Portsmouth centre-back enters the last six months of his deal at Fratton Park. According to the Sun, the Old Firm rivals are, at this stage, in pole position to sign the 22-year-old, but they also face competition from Aberdeen. Some Rangers fans are urging Steven Gerrard to sign up the former England youth international, which is understandable because they do not want him to fall into the clutches of Celtic. However if the Bhoys weren’t also hot on the heels of the defender, would the Gers supporters be having the same reaction? Gerrard could probably do with one or two new centre-backs in the summer, but surely he should be after someone who is better than Whatmough. He is playing in League One at the moment and is unlikely to be a leading defender in the Scottish Premiership. He would be cheap though, so maybe this is a no-risk deal that is worth completing.
