Tottenham are in the hunt to sign Wolves right-back Matt Doherty, according to the Irish Independent.

The newspaper claims that Doherty, 26, is set to hold talks over a new deal at Molineux that could potentially double his current £20,000-a-week earnings after superb first half of the season in the Premier League.

It is understood that the Republic of Ireland international currently operates without an agent, but there is a strong possibility that he could link up with Jorge Mendes.

Doherty is said to have been offered the chance to link up with the Portuguese super-agent, and he is close to saying ‘yes’.

Good move for Tottenham?

Does Mauricio Pochettino really need another right-back in his side right now?

He already has Serge Aurier, Kieran Trippier and Kyle Walker-Peters who can play there, so a pursuit for Doherty’s signature would be quite a strange move by the Tottenham boss.

Wolves would likely demand a big fee for the Irish wing-back considering how well he has played this season, scoring three goals and supplying four assists in 21 league appearances.

The defender would not be a terrible signing for Spurs, but he would be an unnecessary one.

Likely to happen?

Because Spurs are already well-stocked at right-back, it’s hard to see Daniel Levy letting Pochettino splash the cash on Doherty.

Unless the Irishman makes noises about leaving Molineux – which is unlikely – it does not seem as though there is anything in this for Spurs fans to be excited about.
