Tottenham fans will have resigned themselves to a second-half of the season packed with talk of Mauricio Pochettino and the will he/won’t he go to Man United.
That’s nothing new for them – they’ve had to ignore plenty of stories linking their manager to Real Madrid before.
But the United reports are starting to get a bit too specific and a bit too frequent, and Pochettino is doing nothing to deny them.
The latest and the most worrying will send shivers down the spine of any Tottenham fan.
Caught Offside claim that not only has Pochettino held preliminary talks with United about taking over at Old Trafford, but he’s already talked with Ed Woodward about transfer targets.
They claim Leicester’s James Maddison is top of his wanted list and is confident that United will sanction the £70million asking price.
If there are still people asking why Pochettino would want the United job when he’s got a great Tottenham squad to manage, the answer is there.
Daniel Levy would not sanction a £70million move for Maddison, or likely anyone at the moment.
Pochettino has hit a ceiling with Tottenham. One that he keeps threatening to break. But the truth is, he won’t win the league unless Levy is prepared to invest the sort of money Liverpool, Man City and Man United do.
The old adage of no smoke without fire isn’t always true in the football world. But, when the reports get as specific as this, they generally have some substance to them.
As it is, if we were betting men, we’d have our money on Pochettino taking over at Old Trafford.
