Josh Onomah is unlikely to return to Tottenham this January according to respected journalist Alasdair Gold.

The England youth international has spent he first half of the campaign on loan at Championship side Sheffield Wednesday.

But despite a spate of injuries in attacking positions in recent weeks, Gold has claimed that Spurs are unlikely to bring the forward-thinking midfielder back to north London during the current transfer window.

During a Q&A for Football.London, Gold said: “As for Josh Onomah I asked Pochettino about a week or so ago and he admitted he’s considering recalling him from his loan.

“However, I’d be surprised if that happens because new Sheffield Wednesday boss Steve Bruce is a big fan of his and it feels like Onomah’s chance at Spurs might have passed, particularly with Oliver Skipp coming through.”

OPINION

Gold’s comments about Onomah’s chance at Tottenham being gone is a really interesting one. The England youth player is widely regarded as being one of the brightest prospects in the country right now, and has done well at both Aston Villa and his current loan club Sheffield Wednesday. The advent of Harry Winks and Oliver Skipp, however, two young academy graduates of roughly the same and and position, could already have forced him out of the Spurs setup before he really got a chance to prove himself. There’s a lot to be said for young players going out on loan, and no doubt Onomah will come back as a much more well-rounded player than he was when he left, but from a personal point of view, the risk is that you could be usurped as the next bright new thing in your absence. Onomah could still have a future at Spurs, especially with a manager like Pochettino at the helm, but competition will be a lot more fierce when he is called back to his parent club.
