Robbie Keane is convinced Harry Kane is in it for the long haul at Tottenham and insisted he can break Jimmy Greaves’ scoring record at the club.

Speaking as a pundit on Sky Sports for the win over Chelsea on Tuesday night, Keane gave the inside track on the Spurs goal machine after chatting to him about his critics.

“He’s tremendous. I’m sure he’ll stay at this club for a long time. He loves it here. There’s no question that he can get to Jimmy Greaves’ record,” Keane said.

“What I like about Harry is that… everyone keeps talking about “ah, next year is he going to be good?” He keeps doing it. I’m sick of people saying “is he tired?” because he keeps banging the goals in and that spurs him on.

“When you speak to him he gets annoyed when people keep mentioning it and then he just keeps coming on the pitch and keeps scoring goals.

“For me at this moment in time, he’s the best No 9 in the world.”

OPINION

With huge doubts over the futures of Christian Eriksen and Mauricio Pochettino, not to mention Toby Alderweireld, Keane’s words of comfort about the team’s talisman will be music to the ears of Spurs supporters. Speculation about Keane being subject to a £150million-plus interest from the Spanish elite has gone quiet in recent times, particularly after he signed a six-year contract last June and the prolific striker appears very happy to establish himself as the greatest player in the club’s history. He is well on course after his penalty in Tuesday’s 1-0 League Cup semi-final first leg win over Chelsea lifted his tally for Tottenham to 160 goals, fourth in the club’s all-time list. Kane is still a long way short of Greaves, who netted 266 times for the club, but if he steers clear of injury, he could overhaul that market in three years’ time. That would ensure that he would go down in history and remembered as a Premier League and Spurs all-time great.
