Matt Polster has travelled with Rangers’ squad to Tenerife for warm weather training, according to the Daily Record.

The American trialist has been training with the Gers since last month, and has been pictured with Steven Gerrard’s squad in Spain as the ex-Liverpool man continues to assess him ahead of a potential deal.

The 25-year-old predominantly operates as a right full-back, but can play in the centre of midfield, and has one cap for the US.

Despite being a regular for current side Chicago Fire, Polster was sent out on trial to the Scottish side after making only three appearances for the MLS side during their most recent campaign following a knee injury sustained in March.

OPINION

The fact that Polster has been included in Rangers’ squad for their trip to Tenerife is probably a good sign for the American. At the very least it would suggest that Gerrard is eager to see more from him, and could even be taken as an indication that a deal is in the offing. The full-back clearly has quality to the point of international level, and could be a real asset for the Gers, but primarily he has to be a good fit for the squad, and this will give Gerrard a better indication of how he mixes, as well as how he performs. Polster’s versatility could also be a factor in whether or not he is handed a contract, as the Gers look to bring in depth for the title assault that lies ahead. He may not catch the eye in the same way that Jermain Defoe or Steve Davis have, but the American could prove to be a really decent addition.
