Newcastle United winger Callum Roberts has sealed a loan move to south east side Colchester United just days after making the bench against Manchester City.

The League Two side confirmed the capture of the 21-year-old via their official Twitter account, sealing his signature until the end of the season after seeing the wide man named as an unused substitute for the Magpies’ last two Premier League games.

The youngster is a graduate of the Newcastle youth system and scored on his first senior appearance this season with a goal against Blackburn in the FA Cup.

Opinion

Roberts’ exit is highly likely to go under the radar considering how busy deadline day has been for the Magpies but it goes to show just how lacking in depth the club are considering he is heading out from the Premier League substitute bench to the fourth tier of English football. It does not look as though Roberts will be able to forge a career for himself at St James’ Park but this season will have given him plenty of experience, confidence and memories to take forward, not least his goal against Blackburn. He looks a promising talent and will surely be hoping to use his loan spell in the south east as a springboard to earn himself another move away – this time permanently, come the summer window. He might not have made the grade but it is still promising for Newcastle that he has impressed at times in the first team.
