BT Sport pundit Scott McDonald has urged West Brom forward Oliver Burke to join Celtic on loan in the January transfer window.

The Daily Mail has reported that the Hoops have approached the Baggies with an enquiry about Burke, 21, with the view to signing the Scotland international on loan.

Millwall have also been linked with the ex-Nottingham Forest attacker, but McDonald believes that Burke should be packing his bags and heading to Glasgow if the opportunity arises.

“If the choice is Celtic or Millwall then you pack your boots in your bag and you start running up the M6,” said the former Hoops star, as quoted by the Daily Record.

“I don’t mean that to sound disrespectful to Millwall in any way because it’s a good club but the truth of the matter is they are really struggling this season and in relegation trouble.

“I don’t know what that would do to Oliver Burke’s confidence right now when he’s not been playing a lot of games at West Brom.

“So from a career point of view it’s a no-brainer.”

He added: “So if you’re asking me what would I do if I was in his shoes, there’s no question about it, it would be Celtic all day long.”

OPINION

Burke is mainly a right-sided winger, but he can play as a centre-forward, so are Celtic looking to sign Burke to fill in up front? Because Brendan Rodgers really doesn’t need another right-sided winger in his side. The Bhoys definitely need one or two new strikers next month. Odsonne Edouard has been inconsistent and has had his injury issues lately while Leigh Griffiths is on an indefinite leave due to personal issues. Burke won’t be any better than Edouard if they are signing him to play up front, so it really begs the question as to why Rodgers needs to sign the West Brom outcast? He cannot even get on the bench in the English Championship right now and in his three league appearances this season, he has had next to no impact. Joining Millwall could be a step back for Burke, but it could be a step backwards that leads to two step forwards. Moving to Celtic may just leave him in the same position that he is in right now at The Hawthorns.
