Rangers are on the verge of signing Barrow goalkeeper Andy Firth after a “bargain” deal was agreed with the English non-league club, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claims that the 22-year-old is now undergoing a medical ahead of sealing his “shock” switch to Ibrox.

Firth was on the books at Liverpool during Steven Gerrard’s time at Anfield both as a player and a youth coach.

He joined Barrow from the Premier League giants in July 2018 and has made 18 National League appearances since.

Good move for Rangers?

Firth is bound to be a very cheap signing for Rangers, but does Gerrard really need another goalkeeper?

Allan McGregor and Wes Foderingham are locked in as the club’s two first team shot-stoppers this season while Jak Alnwick is out on loan at Scunthorpe.

Robby McCrorie is next in the pecking order, so it’s hard to see how Firth can fit in, unless he is being signed solely to be a future investment or because someone is being offloaded.

Gerrard will know him well though and his judgement should be trusted on this one.

Likely to happen?

The report in the Sun is written by Alan Nixon, who is an extremely reliable source about transfers within England’s lower-tiers, so there is a very good chance that this deal is going to happen?

Firth will obviously jump at the chance to leave National League side Barrow to sign for Rangers and reunite with Gerrard.
