Aston Villa manager Dean Smith has confirmed that senior figures Jesus Garcia Pitarch and Christian Purslow are in discussions over some late transfer business on deadline day after the capture of Tyrone Mings.

The Villans confirmed the loan capture of the Bournemouth defender on Thursday as the clock ticks down towards the 11PM deadline, with a view to sealing a permanent deal for the centre back in the summer.

Speaking after securing their third deal of the winter window, Smith confirmed that director of football Pitarch, also known as Suso, and chief executive Purslow were in talks over potentially sealing more signings in the late hours of Thursday before the market slams shut.

He told the Birmingham Mail: “It’s been very busy. It’s been a busy month with the incomings.

“We’re looking to still bring others in and Suso (Pitarch) and Christian (Purslow) are right at work with that. There’ll be chats going on and paperwork being done.”

Opinion

Aston Villa fans will not want to be going to bed early tonight and there might be a few weary eyes at work on Friday morning as they wait patiently to hear if they are getting any new signings through the door. Smith has certainly given them plenty of hope with his comments over the senior figures at Villa Park and he best hope that the club do not let him or the supporters down by failing to act on the work being done behind the scenes. With plenty of catching up to do in the hunt for a top six finish this season Smith knows he needs to get his team back on track as soon as possible and some new signings might well give them the confidence needed to improve their performances and get the wins needed to catch the rest of their rivals. It is going to be a tough ask but at a club as big as Villa those are the expectations set on your shoulders.
