Leeds United can pull off a masterstroke by barging through the door that has opened for them to sign Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay this month.

The Scotland international, 22, would be an outstanding addition to the Championship leaders’ midfield and has the added value of also being able to play in central defence.

The Scottish Sun report United chiefs are weighing up whether to send McTominay out on loan this month after he slipped down the pecking order since Jose Mourinho’s dismissal.

It is said that Celtic are on red alert to land the giant midfielder, who also attracted interest from Leeds and Aston Villa last summer before staying put at his parent club.

McTominay was so highly rated by Mourinho that he was named as the former manager’s Player of the Year in the club’s end-of-season awards ceremony last year.

The United academy product has accumulated 33 first-team appearances and has also been capped eight times by Scotland.

Powerful, technically good and very mobile for his giant frame – the youngster is 6ft 4in tall – McTominay would be a brilliant temporary signing for the Whites as they look to secure automatic promotion.

He is used to playing big-pressure matches and where there is immense expectation to win.

His youth and willingness to learn would also suit master coach Marcelo Bielsa.

This would be a deal that would tick plenty of boxes for Leeds.
