Leeds United have already signed one proven performer from Spain this month in Kiko Casilla.

Were director of football Victor Orta to follow that up by landing Real Valladolid midfielder Ruben Alcaraz, he will be hailed by the previously doubtful United fanbase as a transfer market genius.

Orta has seen his reputation soar since spearheading the club’s pursuit last summer of Marcelo Bielsa, who has transformed the team’s fortunes.

The capture of Casilla on a four-and-a-half year contract last week was another widely praised deal and now a report from Spain has stated Leeds are working on signing Alcaraz.

Pucela Fichajes claim that Leeds want both Alcaraz and his teammate Toni Villa from Real Valladolid after scouting them frequently in recent times.

It is said that United’s pursuit of Alcaraz, 27, is the more advanced and they “met” the player last week to discuss his interest in moving to Elland Road.

Valladolid will not negotiate on either player, and are adamant that they will only be sold for the £10.6million release clause in their contracts.

Leeds would not pay that while they are in the Championship, but, as Pucela Fichajes point out, they have one eye on signing the pair if they succeed in being promoted to the Premier League at the end of the season.

Alcaraz would be an especially shrewd capture. He has been a mainstay of the Valladolid side this season, starting 18 La Liga matches and playing a key role for the team who are 15th in the table.

The player would certainly be easier to recruit if Valladolid are relegated in May, but it is encouraging for Whites that Leeds are in hot pursuit.
