Ben Foster has dubbed Jay Rodriguez a “right little rat” after the forward headed in West Brom’s opening goal in their 2-0 win against Bolton at the University of Bolton Stadium on Monday night.

Rodriguez, 29, scored his 14th goal of the season after Chris Brunt’s brilliant free-kick was headed goalwards by Craig Dawson.

The defender’s looping header may have found the back of the net without Rodriguez’s touch, which led to ex-Baggies goalkeeper Foster gushing over Dawson and Brunt via personal Twitter account after Albion went ahead.

“Watching Bolton vs WBA, Chris Brunt’s left foot is a thing of beauty, Craig Dawson would head his mum’s head off to win a ball in the box and J-Rod is a right little rat,” the Watford goalkeeper said.

OPINION

It was a very good goal by West Brom, who have been one of the best teams in the league from scoring from crosses this season. Brunt’s free-kick into Dawson was inch-perfect and the centre-back’s header could have found the back of the net. Rodriguez had to make sure it went in to be fair to him, but he could have been deemed offside by the linesman as replays did suggest that the former Burnley star was marginally on the wrong side of the defence. Still, West Brom’s luck probably balanced out when they were denied a stonewall penalty not long after when Mason Holgate’s cross clearly struck the arm of a Bolton defender. That linesman had a shocker of a first half. Rodriguez has continued his fine goalscoring form thanks to the linesman’s mishap. It will be interesting to see who finishes on top out of him and Dwight Gayle this term. Both seem desperate to finish as Albion’s top scorer.
