OPINION
Tottenham fans were already excited after their draw against Barcelona sealed their spot in the Champions League knock-out rounds, but Jan Vertonghen cranked the excitement level up a few more notches when he hinted that the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium could be open in time for the last-16 fixtures. Spurs fans have been waiting for a long time to return to their home at White Hart Lane and many are probably sceptical about the new 62,000-seater stadium opening at all this season. But Vertonghen has had some fans in meltdown by suggesting that there will be Champions League football “at the Lane” in 2019 – and we can totally understand why. Spurs supporters are homesick. Playing at Wembley was exciting to start with but now it is just a drag and the attendance against Southampton last week proved that fans just want to go home. And judging by Vertonghen’s tweet, that return could happen by February.
