Ayr United goal machine Lawrence Shankland has admitted that a switch to Rangers would be hard to turn down as speculation continues swirl about the centre-forward’s future.
Shankland, 23, has been in prolific form this season, scoring 27 goals in 24 appearances across all competitions to help Ayr reach the top of the Scottish Championship table.
The Daily Record reported earlier this month that Swansea were among 20 clubs eyeing up the former St Mirren striker, who also had a spell at Rangers when he was a child.
And he admits that he may not be able to reject the Gers if a return to Ibrox was on the cards.
“Hope so! I used to go and watch them when I was younger,” Shankland told BBC Scotland’s Off the Ball, when asked if he has unfinished business at Rangers, as quoted by the Scottish Sun.
“It’s one of them ones. If it’s an option and you’re from Scotland it’s one you can’t easily turn down.”
OPINION
Shankland would be a superb signing by Rangers in the January transfer window if they are able to pry him away from Ayr at this stage at the season. The issue is that the former Scotland Under-21 international may want to finish the campaign with the Championship leaders so that he can help earn promotion, win a golden boot and potentially boost the number of clubs interested in his signature. Rangers simply must be one of the clubs keeping a close eye on the 23-year-old and if they aren’t then there’s something seriously wrong with Mark Allen’s recruitment. Steven Gerrard needs another striker in January to help Alfredo Morelos get the goals and someone in his form could be lethal in the Scottish Premiership if he is given the right support. Shankland’s deal expires at the end of the season so Rangers may find it difficult to sign him then when there are bound to be other clubs trying to land him for free. Gerrard has to have a go in January.
