Celtic have launched a £6million bid to sign Atalanta right-back Timothy Castagne, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claims that Castagne, 23, has been eyed up as a potential replacement for Parkhead ace Mikael Lustig.

It is understood that Swedish giants AIK are eyeing a pre-contract approach for Lustig, 32, in the January transfer window with the Celtic star’s contract expiring at the end of the season.

Good move for Celtic?

Castagne is a decent right-back and one who is definitely needed next month if Lustig becomes a serious target for AIK.

Brendan Rodgers definitely needs to reinforce his defence next month and Castagne is someone who is still young and quite cheap if Atalanta accept the £6million swoop for him.

He has not played a lot for the Serie A side this season with just 13 appearances across all competitions, however he should be more than good enough for the Scottish Premiership for years to come.

Likely to happen?

The Daily Mail does report that Atalanta are reluctant to cash in on Castange even though he has not played regularly this season, but a decent enough bid should be able to pry him away from Italy.

It all depends on whether or not Celtic are willing to offer Atalanta and the Belgium international what they want.

£6million is a good starting point and one that the Italians may find hard to reject, but would the player be keen on the move?
