Sky Sports pundit Davie Provan has laid into Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos following his red card in the 1-0 defeat to Aberdeen on Wednesday.

The Gers fell short thanks to a goal from Scott McKenna in the seventh minute, but it was the attacker’s sending off that proved to be one of the main talking points from the fixture.

Provan has made his feelings clear about the Rangers mainstay after he got his marching orders, saying his actions were down to a “shortage of brains” rather than a lack of discipline whilst adding that you cannot “educate a rocket”.

“On the back of Alfredo Morelos’s third red card of the season, some are putting it down to a lack of discipline. It’s not. It’s a shortage of brains,” he wrote in the Sun.

“The sight of the Colombian smiling as he headed for the showers in midweek must have had Steven Gerrard furious. How do you get sent off a day after the manager has held a summit on improving discipline?

“Steven must be close to arriving at the obvious conclusion. You can’t educate a rocket.”

OPINION

Alfredo Morelos has had a return to form recently and there is no denying that, but like Provan pointed out, his lack of decision making skills have really come to light recently. The fact that he got sent off a day after Gerrard warned his players about improving their discipline arguably shows how little attention Morelos pays the manager. Gerrard did not warn them for the sake of it, as lack of discipline can have a domino effect – just like it did against Aberdeen. He will now be suspended for a few matches just when Rangers need him most – Celtic have now gone top after a win over Kilmarnock on Saturday – and that could potentially cost them the points they need to keep themselves on their rivals’ toes. Morelos needs to get his act together, as there is only so long that Gerrard will be willing to put up with this type of behaviour.
