Rangers are edging towards signing Kilmarnock attacker Jordan Jones, according to Rock Sport broadcaster Bill Young.

The reliable journalist, who regularly provides updates on the Gers, claimed on his personal Twitter account on Thursday that the 24-year-old’s Killie deal expires at the end of the season but he is not yet sure if he will be able to head to Ibrox in January or in the summer of 2019.

It is understood that Kilmarnock could pick up a fee for the Northern Ireland international if they sell him in January, or Rangers could land him for free on a pre-contract agreement, meaning he would switch to the Glasgow giants at the end of the campaign.

Good move for Rangers?

Whether Rangers sign Jones in January or at the end of the season, the former Middlesbrough winger would be a very good addition at Ibrox.

Jones has been consistently one of the better wingers in Scotland over the last couple of the seasons and he has played a major role in helping Steve Clarke take Kilmarnock to the top of the Scottish Premiership.

He has not scored any goals this season, but the pacey wide-man offers plenty of opportunities for his team-mates and has supplied four assists in 18 appearances across all competitions.

Rangers are well stocked in the wide-areas right now and don’t forget that Jamie Murphy will return from injury at the end of the season.

Maybe it is best for the Gers to focus spending their cash on improving other areas of the squad.

Likely to happen?

Jones has been linked with a move to Ibrox for quite some time now but with the Northern Ireland attacker’s deal expiring next summer, a switch to the Light Blues looks more likely than ever.

Kilmarnock are stuck between a rock and a hard place really.

Do they cash in on him in January so they can at the very least raise some funds to sign a replacement? Or do they keep him for the rest of the season, aim to quality for Europe and then let him leave for free?

Rangers will more than likely be happy with either outcome, but no matter what, it does look like he could be on his way to Ibrox at some point next year.
