Rangers defender Lewis Mayo has admitted that he would be open to a loan move away from Ibrox should the opportunity arise in the future.

Mayo, 18, was handed a new three-year deal earlier this season thanks to his hard work and impressive development in the Gers’ youth set-up, but the centre-back is yet to really make a mark on the first team.

And it seems as though the starlet would be happy to seek a temporary exit from Govan in order to increase his chances of breaking into the senior side, even if it means moving abroad.

After being asked if he believes he can get into Steven Gerrard’s squad, Mayo said via the official Rangers Youth DC Twitter account: “Yes and I am working my hardest every day to give myself the best chance. If it was ever felt that a loan would be beneficial to me then I would be open to it and even experiencing football in foreign leagues.

OPINION

Mayo is one of the more highly-rated youngsters in the development sides at Ibrox, but he is currently nowhere near getting into the first team and he probably won’t unless he seals a loan move elsewhere. There will be clubs in the lower Scottish leagues ready to snap the 18-year-old up on a temporary deal if he is made available, but a move abroad might be a bit too optimistic. If he means a move to England then sure, that should be something that is on the cards for one of Rangers’ best teenage talents, but will clubs from say continental Europe be aware of his talents and what he can offer to the team? It would certainly benefit Mayo a lot to experience different ways of coaching, playing and such in a foreign league, but it could be a lot harder for him to make a mark there as well. He is best off trying to find a Scottish Championship loan or one to England’s League One or Two. That should be Mayo’s goal right now.
