Rangers are reportedly in the hunt to sign Fulham midfielder Kevin McDonald if they are unable to lure Steven Davis away from Southampton in the January transfer window.

According to the Daily Record, McDonald is on Steven Gerrard’s radar ahead of the transfer window re-opening with the 30-year-old Scotland international viewed as an alternative to Davis if that deal is not completed.

It is understood that Fulham will not be too difficult to strike a deal with if McDonald wants to quit Craven Cottage next month, whether it is on loan or a permanent basis.

The 6ft 4 (transfermarkt) colossus has dropped down the pecking order at the Premier League club since Claudio Ranieri was hired, with him appearing just once in the last nine league games due to losing his place and an ankle injury.

Although Rangers would definitely be onto a winner if they re-signed Davis from Southampton, McDonald is a superb contingency and Ibrox will roar if Gerrard is able to wrap up a deal for the former Wolves and Dundee star.

After losing Ovie Ejaria earlier this month, Gerrard is desperate for midfield reinforcements next month.

Scott Arfield, Ryan Jack and Ross McCrorie impressed in the 1-0 win over Celtic on Saturday, but the Gers midfield has failed to stamp it’s authority on opposing sides on too few occasions, and that is something McDonald can help with.

The Fulham enforcer can walk straight into that midfield, controlling the play from deep while also adding a major physical presence.

Out of the three that started in the Old Firm, McDonald would likely take McCrorie’s place, but the young 20-year-old could definitely benefit from training and playing in the shadow of the five-times Scotland international, and hopefully help the Gers on a long-term basis.

It is an exciting time to be a Rangers fan right now.

Gerrard has the Light Blues level on points with Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premiership table after winning the Old Firm on Saturday and some of the players being linked with moves to Ibrox are a cut above what the rest of the league has to offer.

Hopefully the Gers can pull off these promising deals next month.
