Wolves would make big mistake on Pepe

Wolves have made some genius moves in the transfer market in recent seasons with the aid of super agent Jorge Mendes.

The arrivals of players like Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho and Rui Patricio illustrate the club’s newfound clout in the market, and have helped them to the lofty position in which they currently find themselves.

However, such close association with an agent can be problematic in some ways if they push players onto the club who are not such sensible signings.

It looks as though Wolves are currently in such a situation with Mendes as Portuguese outlet Record claim that they are interested in a January deal for centre-back Pepe.

Pepe has just left Turkish Super Lig side Besiktas by mutual consent, with his high wages being a huge problem for the club, who are in financial difficulties.

The Daily Mail claim that those wages were £100,000-a-week, which is a lot of money for a 35-year-old defender on his last legs.

This is not to say that Pepe would not be a good signing for the club in footballing terms, with the Portugal international a serial winner and having some valuable experience.

However, Wolves already have three centre-backs of high quality who have formed a brilliant backline this season, and they have no reason to be spending that amount of money on a player they do not need.

Also, Pepe’s presence may serve to cause havoc and unsettle those players already in place at the club, and could threaten the equilibrium of a squad which has gelled so well this season.

All in all it seems to be a wasteful and unnecessary move which carries far too many risks, and Wolves must bin any thought of making an offer as soon as possible.
