Gary Lineker has reacted to the Man United announcement that former player Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the new interim manager at Old Trafford.

The news was announced – as had been expected – on Wednesday morning and it means that Solskjaer will be in the dugout for the game against Cardiff at the weekend.

Solskjaer will take charge until the end of the season when a new permanent manager will be appointed, and will be joined by Mike Phelan, Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna.

Lineker sent a simple three-word tweet that cleverly married his two favourite subjects at the moment on social media – football and Brexit.

He posted “Norway-plus option” which could have layers – the Norway-style Brexit deal is roundly considered to be the worst of many options on the table.

Lineker posted his comment on his personal Twitter account on Wednesday morning.

OPINION

Solskjaer seems like a decent option to us. He’s got a rich history at Old Trafford and is still extremely passionate about the club. In Phelan, Carrick and McKenna he has an experienced team and things can hardly go much worse than under Mourinho. We imagine there will be an instant reaction from the players and that Paul Pogba will go straight back into the side. He is picking up a fair amount of criticism though, from journalists and pundits. That seems unfair. Solskjaer is highly unlikely to be made permanent manager – Zinedine Zidane seems to be the current front-runner – but this does give him a massive opportunity to showcase his managerial chops on the biggest stage of them all. He can’t really lose and could do his career a whole lot of good. We’d imagine that he’ll have no end of offers in the summer if he does manage to turn United round and somehow sneak them into the top-four. That’s a big ask though.
