Newcastle United will have to splash out far more than £10million to snap up Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham in January, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

Nixon, football correspondent at The Sun, reported on his personal Twitter account that the reported fee of £10million for the 21-year-old was far too low.

Responding to a query from a Magpies fan, Nixon wrote “Much more than that.”

The Northern Echo previously reported that Newcastle were interested in a permanent deal for Abraham, with Crystal Palace said to be ready to depart with £10million for the striker who is currently on loan at Aston Villa.

This is a bit of a blow for Newcastle if Nixon is right in saying the fee for the red-hot hitman will be far in excess of £10million.

The Tyneside club are still yet to break their transfer record set in 2005 when they bought Michael Owen for £16million, and from the sounds of it, they would have to do that if they want to sign Abraham.

The initially reported £10million fee did seem far too conservative, especially considering the fact that the 21-year-old has scored 12 goals already for Villa this season, and has been one of Chelsea’s brightest prospects for a while now.

The other issue for Newcastle is their long-standing interest in Atlanta United star Miguel Almiron. The MLS club have already made it clear that a loan is off the table, so they will have to spend a big chunk of cash on him if they want to sign him.

A deal for Abraham at this quoted price means a deal for Almiron is surely off the table, and vice versa, so it looks to be one or the other for Rafa Benitez in January.
