Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has hailed Christian Eriksen’s performance during Tottenham’s 1-1 draw against Barcelona, describing the Denmark international as ‘immense.’

Eriksen helped Spurs to a crucial point at the Camp Nou on Tuesday as Mauricio Pochettino’s men scraped through to the knockout stages after Inter Milan only managed a draw against PSV Eindhoven.

Merson has now highlighted Eriksen’s display as he drooled over the midfielder’s passing ability while making a worrying prediction on his future.

In a column for the Daily Star, Merson said: “I’ll say one thing though. Christian Eriksen was immense against Barcelona. Some of his passing was the best I’ve seen in a long time.

“I’d be shocked if he wasn’t at Barcelona or Real Madrid next season. He would fit right in at either of those clubs and his contract is up soon.

“That’s the problem for Spurs. How do they take the next step? And if they don’t when does this team they’ve built start to break up?”

OPINION

You could pick out any number of Spurs players for praise after their draw against Barcelona, with the vast majority having a really good game. Eriksen was, as always, key to their hopes going forward. The dazzling Dane just keeps Tottenham ticking with his clever passing and movement, and that was no different against the La Liga giants. Eriksen is in a spot of really good form at the moment for Tottenham, and they will be hoping he keeps that up in the coming weeks. When he is on form there are very few teams who can keep Spurs at bay, with Eriksen feeding the likes of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min. Obviously there are some question marks over his future, with Eriksen having just a year-and-a-half left on his deal, but there is no suggestion that he wants to leave at the moment. Pundits are always saying they would be shocked to see this player and that player still at Spurs past the next summer, but the club have managed to keep hold of all their stars so far. And, with the new stadium on the way, there is even more reason to stay.
