Steve Howey has claimed that a Newcastle United takeover is just around the corner and there will be an announcement within days.

The former Magpies defender was on BBC Newcastle’s Total Sport programme on Tuesday night and he explained that he has heard a takeover is closer than people think.

Howey even went as far as to say his information was that the Premier League had been informed of the potential new ownership ahead of an official statement before next Tuesday’s home match against Manchester United.

“I heard from a very good source the other day a takeover is a lot further down the line than everybody knows,” Howey said. “Apparently, the Premier League have been informed of this and, apparently, news is going to be brought out before the Manchester United game. It is a very good source.”

OPINION

As a Geordie legend who bleeds black and white, Howey is a popular figure among the Toon faithful following a career spent mostly at Newcastle after graduating from their youth-team ranks. His claim that a takeover is just five days away is a huge update in what has been a long-running saga that has tested the immense patience of the club’s supporters. Many Newcastle fans have grown deeply cynical about Mike Ashley’s motives and how willing he actually is to do a deal that promises to lift away the dark clouds that have long enveloped the club. Howey’s status means his update will and should be taken seriously. Supporters’ natural inclination is to be wary. They have, after all, had their fingers burned so often that almost all hope of Ashley going has been extinguished. Yet, could there be a huge silver lining in the coming days? Finally, that possibility does not appear to be quite so unrealistic.
