Barcelona are eyeing up a summer swoop for Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany should he decide to leave the club on a free transfer, according the The Sun.

The newspaper report that talks with the veteran over a contract extension have not yet progressed past the preliminary stage, with his current deal set to run out in July.

The Sun claim that Barca are keen to add experience to their defence and see Kompany as an ideal target despite his well-publicised injury issues.

It is said that Kompany has a ‘job for life’ at City, with the 6’4″ Belgium international [Transfermarkt] likely to go into coaching or administration when he retires.

Good move for Manchester City?

Obviously the club are undecided on whether to offer Kompany an extension, which would only be a deal lasting 12 months according to The Sun.

If Kompany were to leave on a free, then a move abroad would obviously be the preferable option, meaning Barcelona is a viable destination for the centre-back.

The sight of seeing him playing for another Premier League side would be a bad one for anyone involved with City, although it is unlikely that Kompany would want that anyway.

Likely to happen?

Should Kompany leave City and Barcelona formalise their interest, then there is no reason why this one will not materialise.

Kompany would surely be attracted by the thought of a move to the Camp Nou and the prospect of a new experience at the very top level in the final years of his career.
