Ralph Hasenhuttl has made Hertha Berlin forward David Selke his number one target for Southampton in the January transfer window, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper claimed via it’s live transfer blow on Tuesday [03:46am] that Hasenhuttl intends on using his expertise of the German Bundesliga to help add to his newly-inherited squad at St Mary’s next month.

It is understood that 6ft 4 colossus (transfermarkt) Selke is valued at £14million by sixth-placed Hertha.

Good move for Southampton?

If Southampton want to add another striker to their squad that cannot score, then Selke is their man.

To make a success of the January transfer window, Hasenhuttl needs to add players to his squad that are in-form rather than just because he knows them from his time managing them at RB Leipzig.

Selke has scored just one goal in 13 appearances across all competitions this season – there is no suggestion that the 23-year-old would be a success in the Premier League.

Likely to happen?

Selke is a centre-forward who has never really been prolific in his career, so £14million would be a lot to spend on someone who is not a proven goalscorer.

Hasenhuttl is bound to be linked with a lot of his former players in January, but Saints fans will be praying that Selke is one of them that does not end up at St Mary’s before the end of next month.
