Gary Lineker has drooled over Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta in a rave Twitter verdict after their 2-0 win over Manchester City, describing the 29-year-old as a ‘marvellously consistent footballer.’

The Spain international put in a really solid display as the Blues inflicted a first Premier League defeat of the season on Pep Guardiola’s side, with N’Golo Kante and David Luiz grabbing the goals.

Lineker has however singled out Azpilicueta for praise, claiming the Chelsea skipper looked back to his very best against City on Saturday.

Posting on his personal Twitter account, Lineker wrote: “Cesar Azpilicueta has been his customary brilliant self. Marvellously consistent footballer.”

OPINION

It is not surprising to see Lineker single out Azpilicueta for praise after Chelsea’s huge win over Manchester City, with the 29-year-old being a clear stand out performer for the Blues. Azpilicueta has struggled for his best form so far this season but, as Lineker says, was at his very best against Pep Guardiola’s previously-unbeaten side. The Spain international put his body on the line on countless occasions for Chelsea as they managed to nullify an attack which has decimated all in its path so far this season. Azpilicueta’s burgeoning partnership with Antonio Rudiger on the right side of that Chelsea back line is a hugely promising development for Maurizio Sarri, who got the better of Guardiola for the first time in his career. Sarri will now be counting on Azpilicueta to use this performance as a springboard for the rest of the season, with Chelsea needing him on form if they want to make a success of their 2018/19 campaign.
