Phil Thompson has blasted Tottenham fans after many of them stayed at home instead of attending the 3-1 win against Southampton at Wembley on Wednesday night.

The national football stadium was not even half full as Mauricio Pochettino’s side bounced back from the North London derby defeat to Arsenal at the weekend in a clear message to the club that the fans simply want to be back at White Hart Lane.

Liverpool legend Thompson did not bother thinking about any reasons why Spurs fans failed to fill the seats at Wembley, but instead decided to have a go at them while covering the game on Sky Sports.

“How many seats do they have in that new stadium?” he said on Sky Sports News’ Gillette Soccer Special on Wednesday night.

“They’re not going to need most of them looking at this crowd.

“I know the top section is empty but there’s so many empty spaces at Wembley, so many it’s untrue.”

Jeff Stelling replied: “It’s Wednesday night in December, not everybody can afford to go and besides, The Apprentice and I’m a Celeb are on TV tonight.”

Thompson responded: “Go and support your team.”

OPINION

Thompson really is miserable. We live in an age of football where Sky are uploading highlights of the game on Twitter and are showing every single midweek match in the Championship, and he has the cheek to have a dig about a low attendance? Does he not understand why Spurs fans failed to show up in their droves on Wednesday night? Firstly it’s against Southampton, who let’s be honest, are one of the least appealing sides in the Premier League right now. It was also off the back of losing 4-2 to Arsenal and it’s so clear that the fans just want to go back to White Hart Lane, back to their home. Stelling may have a point about it being a cold December night, but it’s unlikely that Tottenham supporters have stayed at home to watch Harry Redknapp in the Australian jungle – no matter how entertaining that is. Spurs will obviously sell-out their new stadium week after week once it opens. Thompson just fancied a moan.
