Newcastle United are plotting a swoop to sign Leeds United forward Kemar Roofe in the January transfer window, according to the Mirror.

The newspaper claims that Rafa Benitez wants to add to his strikeforce next month and has targetted Roofe, 25, as someone who can help the Magpies to be more lethal in front of goal.

It is understood that good offers will be considered by Leeds, even though Roofe has been key to their bid for promotion to the Premier League this season.

Good move for Leeds?

Absolutely not.

Roofe has been way too vital this season, scoring 13 goals in 20 appearances across all competitions, and with Patrick Bamford constantly struggling with injuries, Marcelo Bielsa would have to sign a replacement in January.

Not many players at Elland Road have been as consistent as the former West Brom attacker this season, and Bielsa simply doesn’t need the distraction of having to replace him.

Leeds should reject all bids out of hand.

Likely to happen?

Bielsa would have to be crazy to let Roofe go next month.

Newcastle are not likely to stump up anywhere near a good offer for the 25-year-old anyway due to Mike Ashley’s grasp on the finances at St James’ Park, so this has to be a complete non-starter.

If Roofe is not at Elland Road come February, it will be a massive, massive shock.
