Leeds United are set to sign winger Stuart McKinstry from Scottish Premiership side Motherwell, in a deal that could be worth up to £400,000, according to the Daily Record (live transfer blog, 11.13pm).

The 16-year-old only signed his first professional contract in the summer and made the bench in the recent Premiership game against Kilmarnock.

The highly-rated youngster has been watched by a number of clubs but according to the Daily Record, “Leeds have made their move”.

He is set for talks at Leeds this week and will also be shown around Elland Road.

The deal could rise to £400,000 based on appearances and a sell-on clause.

OPINION

Leeds fans are desperate for Marcelo Bielsa to make some additions to the first-team squad but it looks like Carlos Corberan is set to take first blood with yet another talented signing for the Leeds development squad. McKinstry is a talent for the future and has already made the bench for top-flight side Motherwell. It might not be the news that Leeds fans so desperately want, but their side is seriously building for the future. Motherwell rate McKinstry highly and are confident of getting up to £400,000 for a 16-year-old, which is a serious sum of money. That will depend on appearances but a sell-on clause could net them a further windfall if Leeds cash-in in the future. We’re still hoping that Leeds put their hands in their pockets and bring someone like Jarrod Bowen to Elland Road in January. In the meantime, this is a good little tickler to start the January transfer window. More please.
