West Bromwich Albion are considering a move for free agent Greg Halford after he played for the team’s U-23’s side against Reading on Saturday, according to the Express & Star.

The former Wolverhampton Wanderers man played the first half against the Royals’ academy side, and is currently training with Darren Moore’s side.

The 33-year-old was primarily brought in by the Baggies to help him keep his fitness up as he searches for a new team, however the club are mulling over signing him as defensive cover at right back and centre back.

Halford was released by Cardiff City at the end of last season and has been without a club ever since. Moore has already picked up Wes Hoolahan, Tyrone Mears and Bakary Sako on frees this campaign.

Good move for West Brom?

Possibly, maybe? Halford is past his best and isn’t really any use to a team like West Brom as a regular starter, but he could come in and provide decent cover for the backline.

He is a versatile player with heaps of Championship experience, and he is coming off of a promotion winning campaign with Cardiff last time out. His ability to play at both right back and centre back is probably what appeals to the Baggies, as they will inevitably pick up injuries as we enter the busy festive period.

Moore has been partial to free agent signings this season so it’s possible the club could secure another one here and, honestly, why not?

Likely to happen?

Well it doesn’t sound as if Halford is a priority for West Brom.

He’s keeping his fitness up and looking to prove himself worthy of a contract so it’s hard to know how serious the club are about bringing him in. If they pick up an injury then they might sign him, but who knows?
