OPINION

Rangers registered a rather convincing 7-1 win over Motherwell on Sunday at the Ibrox, and there were plenty of talking points to take away from the clash.

A brace from Scott Arfield, along with a penalty from James Tavernier, an effort from Alfredo Morelos, a strike from Glenn Middleton and a brace from Eros Grezda sealed an important three points for Steven Gerrard’s side despite Motherwell managing to equalise.

Ovie Ejaria also had an effort denied in the second half in the midst of a dominant display from the Gers, with Morelos also being denied a brace.

This is Futbol have picked out three things we learned about Rangers v Motherwell below.

Grezda showed glimpses of what he can do

Eros Grezda signed from NK Osijek in the summer transfer window, but before this match, he was yet to show everybody what he is capable of. But that is no longer a worry, as he certainly proved his worth in this resounding win over Motherwell on Sunday. He was superb throughout the entirety of the match – not only did he register an assist for Middleton’s goal, he also contributed two goals to the scoreline himself in the second half, his first one for the club. If fans were beginning to doubt the summer signing, they mist definitely will not be doing that now. This is a performance that the 23-year-old can only build upon from now on, as it is bound to give him a whole bagful of confidence.

Ejaria proved doubters wrong

Mistakes may have been a huge part of the 20-year-old’s game recently, but he more than made up for that in this demolition. The six foot [Transfermarkt] dazzler was the star of the show for the Gers, despite the fact that he did not have the brightest of starts. Yes, he needs to be more consistent, but he is the one thing that Gerrard has needed to spruce up his midfield. His injection of energy could not be more welcomed at the moment, and even though he did not contribute to the goal rout, his positive display would have impressed the manager massively. All in all, he has really proved his doubters wrong.

Tavernier has upped his game since Moscow

The 4-3 win over Spartak Moscow showed that James Tavernier was poor on the defensive side of his game, but he really redeemed himself during this clash. He provided the assist to the opening goal from Scott Arfield, and he even bagged one himself from the penalty spot during this rout. It is clear that his attacking side is a lot stronger than his defensive work, and although that is something that will need addressing from Gerrard, you cannot fault him going forward at the moment. He was excellent against Motherwell – the defensive side of his game will only come with time.
