Charlie Miller is convinced Rangers have already started making January signing plans – and predicted Steven Gerrard will take the club to the next level in the winter window.

The Light Blues completely overhauled their playing squad during the summer, offloading a number of players and recruiting 16 new ones including headline arrivals Allan McGregor, Scott Arfield and Connor Goldson.

But four-times Ibrox title winner Miller expects another big splurge in the next window as Rangers turn up the title heat on Celtic.

“I’d fully expect Steven Gerrard to make moves in the January window and take the squad to the next level and then we will see where it takes us,” said Miller to the Scottish Sun.

“He will know exactly what he needs and I’m sure he has already identified the players that he wants.”

The international break has been a time for Gerrard to put his feet up and take stock, but it is certain he will be planning, plotting and proposing how to take his much-improved Rangers side to the next level. That will involve work done on the training ground as the team prepare for a brutal schedule of eight fixtures jammed into 27 days starting with Saturday’s clash against Livingston and culminating with the Old Firm showdown at Ibrox on 29 December. In between times, the Light Blues will attempt to reach the Europa League last-32 with crucial clashes against Villarreal and Rapid Vienna. This will be a great test of the strength of Rangers’ squad as well as Gerrard’s man-management skills. It is clear a few signings need to be made in January, irrespective of results over the next month before the Scottish winter break. Rangers are crying out for a creative attacking midfielder who can design the play as well as a thrusting wide players who can supply goals as well as craft.
