Tottenham are famed for having one of the most dominant midfields in the Premier League, and now that Harry Winks has emerged as one of their key stars, that dominance looks set to continue.

However, BBC pundit Danny Murphy has issued a stark warning to likes of Daniel Levy about the consequences of swooping for a talented midfielder in the January transfer window.

He said on Sky Sports ‘The Debate‘ [30/10]: “The quality of players that they’re going for becomes better gradually.

“I think he’s progressed the club forward more quickly than anyone anticipated, but you can’t then all of a sudden go ‘let’s go and get some big players and pay them super money’.

“Because then you have a domino effect of players knocking on your door (like) Harry Winks, who I think is going to be a terrific player.”

Murphy is right – Spurs cannot suddenly decide that they want another midfielder on the books when they have an ace like Winks to call upon.

He combines intelligence and composure on the ball as well as an incredible work rate, which are astonishing traits for someone who is only 22-years-old.

If the Lilywhites turned around and said that they are in the market for another midfielder, then all they are doing is essentially pushing Winks out of the door.

Another player coming in with the same attributes as him will push him further down the pecking order, and somebody of his talent certainly does not deserve that.

This is why Mauricio Pochettino must seriously heed the words of Murphy – or he could end up making one of the club’s biggest transfer blunders.

Winks is a sight to behold on the pitch, and Spurs must count their lucky stars that they have such a prospect on their hands.
