Tottenham navigated another massively tricky Premier League fixture on Saturday night, but fans weren’t happy with all their players.
They beat Wolves 3-2 in the evening kick-off, after being 3-0 up and cruising, thanks to two quick-fire first-half goals from Erik Lamela and Lucas Moura, and one from Harry Kane in the second-half.
But many Spurs fans took to Twitter to berate left-back Ben Davies, with one fan saying he was “appalling” tonight.
COMMENTARY
Ben Davies was brilliant last season, filling in for Danny Rose and delivering the same quality as the England international. He hasn’t been able to do the same this season and lots of Tottenham fans are counting the days down to Rose’s return from injury. That’s still a way off unfortunately after Pochettino confirmed that Rose was unlikely to make a comeback before the international break. That leaves two more games where Pochettino will have to rely on the Welsh international, including the must-win clash against PSV on Tuesday. Davies didn’t start off well, clashing with Mousa Dembele in an incident that led to the combative midfielder getting withdrawn on a stretcher. And Tottenham fans didn’t see anything during the game that convinced them Davies is anywhere near getting back to his best. It’s another three valuable points though and Tottenham are doing impressively seeing as Harry Kane is still a way away from the form we know he’s got in him.
Here are the best reactions from Tottenham fans to Davies’ display tonight:
All their attempts are coming because Ben Davies isn't able to handle Heldor Costa #thfc

1st half: Lamela – tenacious, Kane – meh, Davies – useless, Son – good and bad, Moura – well placed header but mostly ineffective, Sissoko/Winks – fine, Foyth – belongs. #COYS

Spot on with foyth. Tho worth highlighting Davies and Kane have been v average. At what point do we get worried re Kane’s form …he just looks on back foot all time

I start bricking it whenever the ball goes back to Davies and Lloris. Definitely need a new left back and centre midfielder in January.

Can we have anyone else at left back instead of Ben Davies.

Ben Davies was brilliant in Rose's absence last season but has been a major weak link this season. If Rose can get fit he surely starts. #thfc #coys

Every time I watch Trippier and Davies I cry a little remembering how brilliant Walker and Rose were 2 seasons ago. What a step back it's been. #COYS
