Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has lashed out at referee Willie Collum after he sent off winger Daniel Candeias in the team’s game against St Mirren on Saturday.

The referee gave Candeias a second yellow card late on in Rangers’ 2-0 victory, following a bizarre incident between the winger and St Mirren defender Anton Ferdinand.

And Gerrard was less than pleased with the decision: “So Daniel gets a yellow card for that. Come on, lads. Be serious,” he told the Scottish Sun.

“What does he get a yellow card for? The second yellow card is embarrassing. It’s embarrassing. There is your evidence, that’s what you’re dealing with.”

OPINION

This was truly a ridiculous sending off. Candeias appeared to blow kisses at Ferdinand and was then barged to the ground by the defender, but they seemed to have sorted everything out between them – only then did the Gers man pick up his second yellow card. To be sent off for something like that is bizarre, and hopefully the sending off will be rescinded next week. It was a shame because Candeias played very well and scored a wonderful opening goal. However, he picked up his first booking for jumping into the crowd after scoring, which obviously wasn’t the wisest of moves. If we’re being critical, he did know he was on a yellow card already so he shouldn’t have been getting involved in anything with Ferdinand. However, to be sent off for blowing kisses is just baffling, and the decision should definitely be reversed as quickly as possible by the Scottish FA.
