Real Madrid are preparing a £40million bid for Tottenham playmaker Christian Eriksen, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claim the Spanish giants are readying a big-money double swoop on the Premier League worth £90million for Eriksen and Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford.

The Sun report Real are plotting the “daring raid” as Eriksen has entered the last 18 months of his Tottenham contract and talks over a new deal have stalled.

OPINION

£40million for Eriksen? That wouldn’t buy the little toe on his left foot. Sure, the great Dane is out of contract in the summer of 2020 and Spurs are vulnerable to losing him as his contract winds down. But there is no chance of chairman Daniel Levy offloading one of his prize assets for less than half of his market value. Were Eriksen tied down to a long-term contract – as Tottenham are trying to do – he would be valued at not far off the £140million-plus fee that took Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool to Barcelona in January. The problem for the north Londoners is the player’s contract is winding down and an agreement on an extension is not close, as Eriksen hinted at during the recent international break. The longer the impasse continues, the greater the negotiating power of the player, who would be able to leave on a free transfer were he to run down his contract over the next 18 months. Spurs fans need not be too worried about a £40million Real bid, but they should be concerned about the contract stalemate.
